ALARM CAN HELP SAVE LOVED ONES.(Opinion)

The Dec. 16 Times Union included a sad article, "Fatal walk into road," about a man with Alzheimer's disease who was struck and killed on the Northway after wandering from his home.

My mother had Alzheimer's and lived with us for a couple of years before other health problems forced us to move her into a nursing home. While she was living with us, I purchased a coded alarm for about $20, which we installed on our front door.

When the door was opened without entry of the correct code, warning beeps sounded for 10 seconds before the alarm went off. Often, these beeps were suffiicient to stop my mother and give a family member time to intercept her. Many times, either the beeps or the alarm sounded in the middle of the night to alert us that the door had been opened.

My hope is tht this information will be useful to another family with a loved one with Alzheimer's.
