Fed: Govt rejects UN report on detention centres
The federal government has dismissed a United Nations report that criticises Australia'smandatory detention of asylum seekers.
The report by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention follows a visit in May andJune to detention centres at Port Hedland, Woomera and Baxter and interviews with severaldetainees.
But Foreign Affairs Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER and Immigration Minister PHILIP RUDDOCKhave dismissed the report as a disappointing effort.
They say it contains fundamental factual errors, misrepresents Australia's policiesand demonstrates significant confusion about the relationship between international andAustralian law.
The report expresses concern about the automatic and indiscriminate character of mandatorydetention, as well as its potentially indefinite duration.
Other problems cited include the absence of juridical control of the legality of detention, the holding of children in detention and recent restrictions of migration review.
